Biodynamic Seaweed Concentrate is made from a mixture of locally (Mid-North Coast NSW) harvested seaweed and North Atlantic imported seaweed.

This mixture is composted in a unique low temperature process to retain the full nutritional value, with the help of Effective Micro-organisms and with Biodynamic compost preparations.

Trace elements

Seaweed supplies all the trace elements needed to grow healthy plants in balanced proportions. Australian soils are often lacking in base trace elements. The lack of trace elements can inhibit uptake of other nutrients present in the soil but not readily available. The oceans are naturally rich in trace elements and the seaweed takes these elements up in its tissue. Application of seaweed products provides the plants and the soil with a naturally balanced diet of a wide variety of these much-needed trace elements.

Plant Growth Stimulants

Seaweed contains a range of natural growth hormones:

- Cytokinins

Cytokinins are plant growth hormones closely involved in cell division, protein synthesis and chlorophyll production.

- Betaines

Betaines are modified amino acids that can have activities similar to cytokinins. They regulate the osmotic process, which may account for enhanced performance of crops under stress when seaweed is applied. Five different strains of betaines have been identified in Seaweed, but these are not common to all seaweed species and other available extracts.

Other ingredients

Other ingredients present in seaweed, which have a bearing on crop responses, include alginates and various sugars. Alginates have a soil conditioning effect, and foliarly applied sugars have a positive effect on crop growth. Sugars are particularly beneficial to fruit trees after blossom set when the tree transmits sugars to the developing fruit.

Foliar feeding

Foliar feeding has been proven to be 8 to 20 times more efficient than feeding through the roots. Plants naturally take up a lot of nutrients through their leaves out of the air, and the foliar feeding is based on this principle. Seaweed is easily taken up by the plants through the leaf to give a quick supply of trace elements, small amounts of macronutrients, growth hormones and various antibiotics.

Soil conditioner

Use of seaweed will bring soils into biological balance and its main action is to improve the uptake of nutrients, not only those contained in the seaweed, but also those present in the soil or added as fertilisers. Seaweed contains certain catalysts which release from the soil 'unavailable' elements such as phosphorus, manganese, zinc, copper and others which are necessary for healthy growth, but which are often 'locked up' through an imbalance in other elements. The catalysts also enable crops to make better use of nutrients applied as fertilisers, by ensuring plant foods are taken up in balanced proportions.

Using Seaweed on your crops will improve the soil structure, its aeration, moisture-holding capacity and water circulating capacity, as it tends to bind loose soils and to open up compacted soils. It produces more favourable conditions for nutrient transport from the soil to the roots, physically, chemically and biologically. The result is better soil balance, which is reflected in healthier and more vigorous plants and higher quality fruit or vegetable.

Improved health

The increased vitality of the plants treated with Seaweed, can be linked to the increase in sugar levels (Brix readings), allowing the plants to be better able to withstand pests, disease, and adverse weather conditions (including marginal frosts). Brix readings are an indication of the health of the crop. Plants with a balanced and complete diet will be healthier and will be able to reach their full genetic potential.

Pests and diseases have a natural role to clean up unhealthy plants. By improving the general health of your crops you are less likely to suffer from devastating pest attacks or diseases.

Relieving the stress in your crops

One of the major effects of Seaweed is the alleviation of stress, such as that resulting from drought conditions, frost or when transplanting. The improved root system is better equipped to make use of the restricted moisture available, while the natural growth hormones in the Seaweed will help the plant to mobilise more of its nutrients into the plant and so make the most of its limited resources.
